Choosing types of Warehouse Storage Racks

Warehouse storage racks are used to store goods at different levels, and they’re highly customizable to your specific needs. Ideally, you’ll use different warehouse storage racks to maximize your space; in a nutshell, every business has unique needs regarding how it chooses to store its goods. By making informed decisions about your warehouse storage racks, you can ensure that your warehousing operations run smoothly.

Pallet Racks: Depending on your industry, you may find pallet racks useful if you’re dealing with heavy or bulky goods that need to be stacked in layers. These racks allow goods to be stacked on top of each other, so your warehouse can store large amounts of products in a relatively small space. However, pallet racks are not practical if you’re dealing with more delicate items because they do not offer much protection from knocks and falls.

Carton flow racks: Carton is used to storing items that don’t stack well and have different sizes, such as boxes or bottles. These racks allow goods to be moved by forklift trucks, making them highly useful if you need to store large volumes of items quickly.

Cantilever racks: Cantilever rack is used to store items in many different sizes, such as industrial parts and tools. These warehouse storage racks allow goods to be stacked on shelves without getting in each other’s way, making them useful if you need to maximize your space but want to use vertical height.

Design a floor plan that meets your needs now and also allows for growth

When designing a warehouse space, one of your top priorities is to create a floor plan that meets your needs now and allows for growth. Your starting space should include room for machines, storage, shipping and receiving areas and any other workstation you need to run your warehouse effectively. In later years, you can always use different warehouse expansion strategies (also known as warehousing add-ons) to expand your current location if it’s too small for future needs.

Install a mezzanine above a floor-level process

Mezzanines are levels within a room that are elevated, often just over an adjacent floor-level process. These can put to many different uses, but they work best to extend a process at the same level or provide more room. Install this now and it will be an easy option for space, like extra storage or operations you don’t want cluttering up your main factory space. Consider this when you have new storage or other industrial construction work done.

Arrange the warehouse racks effectively

When your warehouse is complete, don’t just stand there: There’s no sense in standing around when you could be doing something. If you have racks that are not currently being used, simply move some pallets onto them to free up space on your other racks. When you can see daylight at one end of a rack, it’s time to start moving pallets from that end. You never know what opportunity might come along and unexpectedly use up all of your warehouse space.

Even if you don’t have a huge warehouse, there are plenty of creative ways to get pallets closer together while still getting them in and out of your space easily. Push your pallets as close together as possible to use all of your warehouse space, maximize storage area and reduce product damage. With just a little bit of ingenuity labels on each pallet and it is possible to fit significantly more pallets into your warehouse space than would appear possible by simply looking at it.  Furthermore, if you’re planning on increasing storage capacity soon, simply upgrading your current equipment is one easy way to make room for more items quickly and inexpensively.

Extend your racking up vertically

As you make plans to optimize your warehouse space, it’s important to remember the vertical space. There are two main methods of maximizing your vertical storage: extending racks vertically and incorporating towers into your warehouse layout. The most effective way is to extend a rack up one level (or more) – do not worry about reaching the ceiling; most high-cube containers are made to be mounted higher off the ground. Vertical extension is usually easier than lateral movement; however, it might require that you change out some of your existing shelves. Although it can involve additional cost and effort, having at least one or two levels of racking on wheels can allow you to quickly increase your vertical storage as needed, whether for seasonal goods or special projects. This approach works exceptionally well in open areas where racking can reach from wall to wall and does not take up any valuable floor space.

Leverage your warehouse management system for directed put-away

With a directed put-away, you don’t have to think about where an item goes. The warehouse management system knows where each item should go based on your item master and will move items from receiving to picking to shipping without any intervention. This technology can help reduce manual errors and time spent looking for items. And it frees up employees for higher-value tasks such as customer service, new product development, or team collaboration.
